IT professionals insurance FAQs

  • What is broadform liability insurance?

Broadform liability insurance covers your business for both public and products liability.  This means it protects your business against claims resulting from accidents or injuries that occur as result of your business activities, as well as damage to property owned or controlled by someone else.

Broadform liability is a part of our IT professionals insurance product. For more information about this combined cover, please read the Information and Communication Technology Liability Policy.

  • What does broadform liability insurance cover?

If damage or an accident occurs as a result of your work, the impacted third party may be able to make a claim against your business, which can result in costly legal fees as well as the obligation to pay for the damage or injury you may have caused.

CGU’s professionals insurance includes broadform liability cover your business for:

    • Legal costs incurred in the defence or settlement of a claim
    • Cover for others that may be acting on behalf of your business when the incident occurred
    • Loss or damage of goods – which are in your care custody or control which you do not own
    • Loss or damage of someone else’s property that occurs while performing your service
    • First aid expenses at the time of an incident

  • How much liability insurance do I need?

Every business is different, and there is no ‘one size fits all’ rule for how much insurance your business needs.

Sometimes the amount of public liability insurance you need will be dictated by the contracts you work on – for example, some corporate and government contracts will stipulate a minimum amount of liability cover.
CGU offer three levels of broadform liability cover which can be purchased from us directly:

    • $5 million
    • $10 million
    • $20 million

Liability claims can be very costly, so it’s important you choose a level of cover that will financially protect your business should you need to make a claim.

  • What is professional indemnity?

Professional indemnity insurance provides you and your business with protection against claims for financial loss, bodily/personal injury or property damage arising from an act, error or omission in the performance of professional services.

  • Why do I need professional indemnity insurance?

If you’re in any kind of profession that gives advice or provides a service, for example: project management, website design, or IT consulting, professional indemnity is a necessity. Your business is your livelihood, so protecting it is paramount.

On occasion it’s possible in your profession to unintentionally breach privacy or confidentiality, omit information, make an error of judgement or provide the wrong advice. A simple act, error or omission can lead to a claim against your business, therefore making it vital to protect yourself, your business, and reputation.

Professional Indemnity Insurance protects you from bearing the full cost of these claims and disputes, and from the time and resources they consume.

The threat of claims and litigation is very real and can potentially bankrupt businesses, small or large. It may seem like a distant possibility, but legal action often arises from an unforeseen event to completely disrupt businesses
