Insurance for renters can provide coverage to either repair your insured contents or replace them with new ones if they're damaged after an incident we cover.
Protect your valuable belongings while you rent
When you're a tenant, it’s sometimes hard to know whether you need insurance. Landlords are responsible for insuring their rental property building and any contents they own. However, landlord's insurance generally doesn't cover your belongings like your furniture, whitegoods, electrical appliances, clothing, personal effects and other possessions. If you're renting a house, unit or living in a share house, you might want to consider our insurance for renters, Contents Insurance
A great claims service
We go out of our way to make the claims process hassle-free, and pay valid claims as quickly as we can. After all, you’ve got other things to worry about.
New for old
If your saggy old sofa is damaged in a fire or flood, we’ll replace it with a new one. In other words, with our new-for-old replacement there’s no depreciation on your contents.
A roof over your head
Worried about where you'll sleep at night if the rental property you live in is significantly damaged as the result of an incident? As a tenant, CGU looks after you, providing temporary accommodation for up to 12 months.

What is Contents Insurance?
When you take out Contents Insurance as a renter you're taking out cover for things inside your home – like whitegoods, art, electronic equipment, jewellery and furniture.
How much you’re covered for depends on a few things. You choose the sum insured for all your contents (we’re here to help if need be), and then you can choose from three levels of cover – Premium, Quality or Basic.
To really wrap your head around what’s covered with our Contents Insurance, you should take a look at each Product Disclosure Statement (PDS):
-
How much does Contents Insurance cost?
When we calculate your contents insurance premium, we look at a whole range of factors – from the amount of contents you are insuring, to where you live, and more.
The best way to answer this question is to complete a quick quote. You'll have an answer in less than five minutes.

What isn’t covered by Contents Insurance?
This depends on the type of policy you’ve taken out. Each of our Contents Insurance policies comes with a Product Disclosure Statement (PDS), which lists out all the exclusions to your cover.
In short, you’re not covered for any foreseeable event or for general wear and tear (for example, your home and contents deteriorating over time due to age).
We encourage you to read your PDS to see the full list of what is and isn’t covered:

Is Contents Insurance best for me?
If you’re not concerned about covering the building you live in – for example, you may be renting the home – then Contents Insurance is a great way to cover all your possessions in the event that they are damaged or stolen.
