Getting the right home and contents insurance in Western Australia

Hey sandgropers! Have you got the right home and contents insurance for where you live in Western Australia?

Living way out west

Let’s face it. WA is enormous. In fact, it’s one of the largest states in the world, covering an incredible 2.5 million square kilometres.

From the Kimberley to Kalgoorlie, Dunsborough to Derby, Esperance to Exmouth, WA has many vastly different places to call home – some of them so remote that you feel like you are at the very end of the earth.

It goes without saying that all of these places have unique characteristics – some are sleepy fishing villages, some are thriving tourist hotspots, some are the hub of mining or farming communities. But wherever you go in WA, you’re assured of enjoying low population density, cultural diversity, and a relaxed lifestyle.

Insurance tips for living in WA

Floods, bushfires, cyclones … you name it, somewhere in WA a community is either bracing themselves for disaster or mopping up after one. It’s the price you pay for living in such an expansive, wild state. Perth isn’t immune to the dangers, either – it has recorded some fierce storms in recent years, including a momentous hailstorm in 2010 that caused an estimated $1.08 billion in damage.

The threat of bushfire is omnipresent in wider WA. With much of the land dry and parched throughout most of the year, all it takes is a single lightning strike to wreak a path of devastation. In 2011, for example, a major fire in Margaret River destroyed 34 homes, while another fire on the outskirts of Perth destroyed 72 homes. In 2016, 181 dwellings were lost in and around Yarloop. And there have been many, many more.

Wherever you live in Western Australia, it pays to be prepared. And this includes making sure that your home and contents insurance is up-to-date. This way, you’ve got the peace of mind that you’re covered in case a wild weather event comes your way.
