Preparing for cyclones

Reducing the risk of damage from cyclones can be as simple as planning and preparing your home or business for the worst case scenario.

Although cyclones are generally seasonal, with Australia’s cyclone season officially running from November to April, it is wise to be prepared for a cyclone year round.

The following list provides advice on how to prepare your property for a cyclone. It is essential that you plan well in advance, have an emergency kit packed and that everyone in the family or workplace understands the plan of action.

Cyclones often bring with them heavy rain which can lead to flood conditions. You may want to read the flood preparation checklist to help you prepare for possible floods following a cyclone.

This page provides general advice that CGU Insurance has sourced from emergency services. For up-to-date and specific advice relating to the risks in your area please speak to your local council or emergency services.

Cyclone preparation checklist

    • Check that the walls, eaves and roof of your home or business are secure
    • Fit shutters or metal screens to all glass areas
    • Trim overhanging tree branches
    • Move all loose material to a secure area
    • Understand the geography of your area, taking into consideration flood risks, the highest (and closest) safe zone and evacuation areas (as designated by authorities)
    • At the start of the cyclone season, prepare a folder with all relevant emergency documents and emergency numbers that will be safe, secure and accessible at a moment’s notice
    • Tune into your local radio station to monitor the severity of the cyclone
    • Have a battery radio nearby in case of power outage
    • Have an evacuation route and emergency kit planned
    • Protect yourself with mattresses, rugs or blankets under a table or bench if the building begins to break under the strength of the cyclone
    • Do not leave safety until you are sure the danger has passed
